The four levels for holding steady in a chaotic world
Resilience is everywhere. In psychology, in business, in the way we talk about hard times, the same promise keeps coming back: bounce back, return to normal. The idea owes a great deal to the French neuropsychiatrist Boris Cyrulnik, who showed that a wounded human being can rebuild. It is a beautiful and true idea.
But when an organization goes through a crisis, resilience is no longer enough. It is only the second level of a staircase that has four. Here are the other three, and why the last one changes everything.
What Boris Cyrulnik revealed
Boris Cyrulnik, a neuropsychiatrist and ethologist, took a concept from materials science, resilience, the capacity of a body to absorb a shock and return to its shape, and applied it to the human being. After a trauma, a person is not condemned to stay broken. They can rebuild, sometimes around what he called a resilience tutor, and become able to live again.
This diagnosis matters immensely at the individual, psychological level. It makes hope credible. It says the shock does not have the last word.
But resilience describes a precise movement: returning to the state before. The compressed spring springs back. The bent reed straightens up. And that is exactly where, for an organization caught in the storm, something is off.
A staircase with four steps
To place resilience, you have to set it on a scale. Facing a shock, a system can behave in four ways.
First step, robustness. The system takes the hit without breaking, but it does not move. It is the wall, the armor. Solid, until the day the strain exceeds its limit. It does not break, but it learns nothing.
Second step, resilience, Cyrulnik’s. The system absorbs the shock, then returns to its original state. Better than robustness, because it absorbs instead of resisting. But its horizon is still the return to before.
Third step, antifragility. The concept is Nassim Taleb’s: some systems do not merely absorb stress, they come out of it stronger. The muscle that grows under effort, the start-up that learns from its failures. The system does not return to its former state, it moves up a notch. Fourth step, emergence. And this is where chaos theory opens a step the other three never see.

Emergence: not returning, changing level
The science of chaos, that of Ilya Prigogine, Lorenz and Mandelbrot, describes what happens to a system pushed far from its equilibrium. It does not merely hold, bounce back or strengthen. It shifts to a higher level of organization. I call this emergence. The system does not return to the state before, it reorganizes into something more complex that integrates the old without going back to it. From atoms emerge molecules, from molecules the cell, from neurons consciousness. Each time, a little something extra that did not exist before.
This fourth step reveals the limit of the second. In a world that has structurally changed, more numerous, more connected, faster, returning to the state before is often neither possible nor desirable. An organization that, after a crisis, aims only to return to its former shape is in fact aiming at a world that no longer exists. Resilience takes it back to square one. Emergence uses the crisis as a springboard toward a better organization.
One point matters here. Cyrulnik comes from ethology and psychiatry. Taleb comes from finance and probability. Chaos theory comes from physics and mathematics. Three independent roads, three different scales, meeting on the same intuition: a shock can make you grow. It is not about extending one thinker or another, but about noting that chaos science lets you climb one more step, the step of organizations and whole systems.
How to foster an emergence
That leaves the concrete question: can you trigger an emergence, or do you wait for it? You do not command it, but you can create the conditions that make it likely. Chaos theory offers two simple, immediately usable tools for that.
The first is the strange attractor. In a chaotic system, trying to predict and control everything fails. What you can do is set a clear direction, a fixed point the whole system moves toward, without micromanaging the path. It is the bearing you keep in the storm when the map is useless.
The second is exponential routines. Small actions repeated every day that, through the butterfly effect, compound over time and end up producing large changes. Direction without repetition stays a wish. Repetition without direction burns out. The two together, what I sum up as Direction plus Repetition, create the ground from which emergence can spring.
This is the difference between enduring a crisis and using it. The collapsologist sees collapse. You can choose to become an emergist: someone who not only believes in emergence but works to bring it about.
From rebuilding to evolving
Cyrulnik’s resilience taught us that we can get back up. That is a precious gain, and the starting point. Chaos theory adds a bigger promise: we are not bound only to return to before, we can emerge higher. At the scale of a person, a team, an organization, and perhaps of our civilization.
We have never had so little control, and never so much power to influence things.
